Track and Systems Installation for the New Second Track on the Main Line Ronkonkoma Branch Phase II

Adding a New Track and Two New Stations Along the LIRR
Ronkonkoma, New York

Our firm lead the design of a $45-million combination design-bid-build/design-build project for the addition of a second track on the Ronkonkoma Branch for the Phase II project limits (Farmingdale Station to approximately one mile west of Central Islip Station) along the Long Island Rail Road. Constructing a second track to Ronkonkoma increases service reliability and on-time performance along the main line, allows for faster recovery time following service incidents, and, when combined with other improvements, provides more service capacity to meet existing and future demands.

The design-build portion included two new stations. Our work at Wyandanch Station included design of two 1,020-foot-long platforms, a new pedestrian bridge with ADA-compliant elevators, canopy structures, and an integral snow melting system in the platforms. Our work at Pinelawn Station included design of two 192-foot platforms, passenger shelters, and parking and site improvements. Multiple design packages were created to collaboratively fast-track the project. The design-bid-build portion of this contract included track and roadway grade crossing modifications, signal and communication systems, traction power, and new electric service installations. We coordinated our work with the track design at each station we designed.
