The State Road (SR) 528 airport toll plaza conversion project consisted of widening two miles of the existing high-speed, limited-access facility and replacing the mainline toll plaza with a new split-plaza configuration, equipped with both cash and electronic toll collection (ETC) only express lanes. The existing mainline plaza was located just outside the north entrance to the Orlando International Airport, and the proximity to the airport coupled with the heavy volume of airport traffic was creating operational issues on the SR 528 mainline as well as the airport access ramps. A split-plaza configuration was designed for the replacement due to the required width of the proposed plazas, to accommodate both the ETC express and cash lanes, and the limited right-of-way available.
