River District Tower

Restoring a Historic Icon
Danville, Virginia

We provided the River District Tower, LLC with architectural; interior design; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and site/civil engineering services for the renovation of the Dan River Research Building. The four-story, 100,000-square-foot facility’s current occupants include Spectrum Medical Center, and Danville Regional Medical Center, as well as an upscale, multi-level restaurant.

In an effort to secure state and federal historic tax credits, we used adaptive reuse throughout the design to preserve as much of the historical architecture and character as possible. Subtle additions were added in key locations to minimize the renovation’s visual impact on the City of Danville’s historic district. A tall glass tower was designed to highlight entry points into the facility while enhancing the exterior textures. The interior space provides contemporary and state-of-the art office environment for the myriad clinics while paying homage to the original factory setting. A museum reflecting on the history of Dan River Mills is located at the entrance on the first level. This project involved coordination with the Department of Historic Resources.
