Continuous Flow Intersection

Florida’s First Continuous Flow Intersection

The intersection of State Road 82 and Daniels Parkway/Gunnery Road, located near the city of Fort Myers, Florida, is an integral piece of the Florida Department of Transportation's six-lane capacity improvement project in Lee County. During heavy traffic hours, the popular commuter intersection sees an average of over 1,350 cars/hour going against even heavier peak-hour left turn volumes of 1,410 cars/hour. The typical solution, a grade-separated single-point urban interchange, could have helped alleviate traffic, but at a substantial cost to the client. Instead, we designed a continuous flow intersection (CFI) to meet the specific needs of the intersection — a design that offers comparable levels of service flow, but with greater cost-savings.
